Plans ramped up for new concrete skate park in Surrey Heath

Approval of plans for an exciting new concrete skate park is set to be discussed by the Surrey Heath Borough Council Executive.

Serving BMX riders, skaters and scooter users, the brand-new concrete skate park will replace the well-used metal skate ramps at Crabtree Recreation Ground in Camberley.

The old skate ramps, having served the community well, have worn out and are no longer cost-effective to repair.

The skate park is currently well-used by varying ages and is particularly important as a recreational space for 10–18-year-olds.

In recent years residents have petitioned the council to update this facility, and it is now proposed that a new concrete skate park is installed to upgrade the existing one, while reducing long-term maintenance and overall repair costs.

If approved, it is proposed the new skate park would be funded by Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funds - contributions made by developers for development taking place in the borough. Consultation would take place with the local community and user groups to ensure an accessible and suitable facility is built for as wide a range of the community as possible.

Surrey Heath Portfolio Holder for Net Zero, Environment and Leisure Cllr Morgan Rise said: “This is an exciting project, reflecting our commitment to improving health and quality of life of residents, and demonstrates that we are actively listening to your needs.

“If approved, the new skate park will offer long-term benefits for families and young people alike, including providing a safe place to skate, and creating an outlet for a healthy activity for young people.

“We look forward to hearing the community’s views about how they would like a new skate park to look.”

Providing top-class facilities and an inclusive space for all ages, this new facility would add to the two skate parks already in the borough, in West End and Mytchett.
