Our new ‘Join In’ scheme reduces the financial barrier faced by some young people and their families accessing physical activity via club and team sports.

It has been developed by the Council’s Community Development Team in consultation with our Family Support Team and local sports clubs.  Funding is from the Active Surrey Sustainability Fund.

Councillor John Skipper, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Surrey Heath Borough Council said;

“I’m delighted this scheme is now available, it provides so many wonderful opportunities.  No child should be denied taking part in an activity they enjoy due to cost and this scheme will enable many more children in the borough to join our local sports clubs and enjoy all the benefits and training they provide.

If you are eligible and your child would love to get involved in a sport please apply today.”

How to apply

A young person interested in joining one of the clubs currently in the scheme will need to attend a free taster session. Once completed and if they wish to join, their parent/support worker can find out more information and access the application form on our Join In scheme webpage.

Once approved payments for club membership will be made directly to the relevant sports club.

Local sports clubs currently in the scheme

  • Surrey Rams Basketball
  • Camberley Rugby Club
  • Camberley Cricket Club
  • Bagshot Tennis Club
  • Camberley Judo Club
  • Generation Gymnastics
  • Camberley Town Youth Football Club

If other sports clubs want to get involved in the scheme, they should contact the Community Development Team via email -  community.development@surreyheath.gov.uk (link sends email)

Qualifying criteria

The ‘Join In’ scheme is available to young people in receipt of free school meals, and/or whose parents are in receipt of universal credit.  Young people and their families who are working with the Council’s Family Support Team, carer support organisations or similar will also be considered eligible on a case-by-case basis.

Sports clubs who are part of the scheme will also be able to refer young people who they believe fit the scheme’s criteria. Priority will be given to young people who are not already a member of other sports clubs or teams.
