Work experience
We value the importance of work experience and welcome applications from young people who live in and around Surrey Heath.
Placements can be in most of our service areas. To help us find the best place for you please search our website to find out more about the services we provide. The length of placement can vary to suit the needs of applicants but will often be for one working week.
Working hours are normally 9am until 5pm from Monday to Friday. On the first day students are asked to come to the Surrey Heath House Main Reception to be greeted and inducted by one of the Human Resources Team.

- students currently attending local schools who are looking for short placements as part of their course
- former students wishing to undertake unpaid placements to support their studies
What we are looking for
We are looking for work experience who are enthusiastic about learning more about what we do at the Council. The ideal candidate would be polite and friendly and have an enthusiastic attitude towards learning.
We take work experience from a range of ages from 14 to 16 year olds starting to explore career paths to university students who are looking to supplement their studies and cement their future career goals.
What we do and how we are organised
In applying for our work experience programme, you may want to include which team you are interested in working with. Some of our key functions include:
- The ICT team look after the technology that we use at the Council and provide technical support to staff.
- The Community Development team are responsible for all of our community outreach projects including clubs like walking football for more elderly members of the community. They also do a lot of work coordinating with charities in the borough.
- Communications oversee how the Council connects with it’s residents through a number of mediums such as over the phone, social media and our website.
- Human Resources look after recruitment and payroll.
- Property and Economic Development look into the best way for the Council to invest its money, promoting economic growth and regeneration of the local area.
- Democratic Services oversee the election process of our councillors.
- The Legal Services team advises the Council on a wide range of legislation, including employment and property law.
- The Planning team regulates and controls local development by implementing the local planning policy.
- The Finance team are in charge of budget collecting and analysing the Council’s finances.
- Recreation and Leisure Services look after our parks and greenspaces.

Once you have submitted your application you will receive an email confirming whether you have been successful. If we receive a large number of applicants, suitable candidates would be invited to attend an interview.
Successful candidates will be required to complete a form along with their school or place of education.
