Internships

Unfortunately we will not be running our internship programme in 2024.

Our Summer Internship Programme offers university students the opportunity to undertake paid work over the summer whilst gaining valuable experience within a local authority.

As an intern you will receive practical and professional training. You'll work alongside experienced colleagues who will supervise your development. You will also be offered a mentor who can support and guide you through your internship.

Placements can last from four weeks to three months.

Previous interns have worked in a variety of areas including:

  • Economic Development
  • Communications
  • Investment and Development
  • Revenues and Benefits
  • Human Resources
  • Planning Policy
  • Housing
  • Community Development

All of our current vacancies are listed on our jobs portal.

Feedback from some of our interns

"This internship has really helped build my confidence in the workplace and put my skills in to practice. I enjoyed my time at SHBC and learnt a lot of transferrable and professional skills that I can implement in my new job."
- Investment and Development Intern
“The Internship exceeded my expectations. I did not think I would be given as much responsibility as I have been, which makes me feel trusted and valued in the team. I have been given lots of exciting projects to be getting on with so I always have something to do! I feel as though I have already developed my skills massively which, along with my degree, will make me much more employable for the future.”
