Your landlord is responsible for making sure that your home has:
- reasonably modern facilities
- adequate heating and insulation
- been satisfactorily maintained
- been repaired where needed
- no health and safety risks
You should report any maintenance issues to your landlord as soon as possible.
You should also keep a record of requests made to them in case you need to follow up at a later date.
More information on landlord and tenant responsibilities for repairs can be found on the Shelter website (external link).
If you are a tenant in social housing, please visit the report a repair webpage.
Damp and mould
Issues with condensation, mould, mildew and damp is very common.
The most common cause is excess moisture in the air. When the moisture makes contact with a cold surface such as a window or a cold wall it creates condensation.
If this condensation is not cleared regularly, then mould can grow. Clearing signs of condensation regularly and good heating and ventilation should resolve the issue.
More information on damp and mould in rented homes can be found on the Shelter website (external link).
