Further to the statement on 9 August in relation to an additional duties allowance of £15k per annum for the Chief Executive, Karen Whelan.
Following her request for an independent investigation, the Chief Executive has asked the Deputy Chief Executive to manage the process of appointing an independent investigator, in consultation with all Council Group Leaders, to look into this matter as it would not be appropriate for her to do so.
Over the last two weeks Group Leaders representing all Members of Surrey Heath Borough Council (Cllr Rodney Bates - Community Group, Cllr Richard Brooks - Conservative Group, Cllr Sharon Galliford on behalf of Cllr Peter Barnett - Green Group and Cllr Sashi Mylvaganam - Liberal Democrats) have met with the Deputy Chief Executive and the Monitoring Officer and collectively agreed that an investigator be appointed to review all relevant procedures, processes, accountabilities and decisions leading up to and following the award of the additional duties allowance. The agreement of all Group Leaders to this approach has replaced the requirement for the Performance & Finance Scrutiny Committee to make the appointment.
Work is underway to appoint the investigator and further information will be provided once the appointment has been made.
A Motion on this matter will be considered at an Extraordinary Council Meeting on Wednesday 4 September at 7pm. The agenda for this meeting will be available from our website by 5pm on Tuesday 27 August.
