Surrey Heath Steps Challenge

Sport Relief 2018

Update 12 March 2018: Thanks to a fantastic response we are on target to comfortably reach our initial target of 10 million steps. Well done everyone!

So, to keep everyone motivated through to the conclusion of this challenge on 23 March, we are revising our target to 15 million steps!

To achieve our new target we are going to need even more people tracking their steps, so if you haven’t signed up yet, now is the perfect time. Every step counts!

Sport Relief is back from 17 – 23 March 2018, and this year the nation has been set the challenge of walking a collective billion steps a day during the event.

Surrey Heath Borough Council is committed to encouraging our community to be more active, so in conjunction with Sport Relief, we’re inviting everyone to get involved in our very own “Surrey Heath Steps Challenge”.

We want to see if as collectively as a borough, we can walk 10 million steps between Friday 23 February and the conclusion of Sport Relief on Friday 23 March.
You don’t have to be an ‘athlete’ to take part – walking the dog, taking the stairs or going for a stroll on your lunch break will all help us reach our target of 10 million steps!

I’m up for the challenge! How do I get involved?

To get involved, you simply need to follow this link using your smartphone

You don’t need to submit any personal details although you will need an email address. Just pick a screen name that you’re happy to have seen publicly.

Once you have registered, you should automatically join the “Surrey Heath Steps Challenge” league and you will be given links to download the app from the App Store or Google Play.

Because it’s a league, there is the opportunity to challenge your friends and family to see who will come out on top – or you can contribute solo towards our Surrey Heath team target of 10 million steps.

You can either use your smartphone itself to measure your steps, or most fitness tracking devices (e.g. ‘fitbits’, Apple/Garmin watches) can be synched up with the app. From there, your steps will start counting towards our target!

I don’t have access to a smartphone, can I still take part?

We want this challenge to be as accessible as possible, so if you want to get involved but don’t have access to a smartphone, we have a limited amount of pedometers to hand out. Please contact or call 01276 707229 to request one.

Unfortunately we can’t manually add your figures onto the Sports Relief app, but if you keep us up to date with your weekly total we can add these figures onto our grand total which we will be sharing on social media – and most importantly you’ll still be helping us hit that magic milestone of 10 million steps!

I work at a school – can we take part?

We are actively encouraging schools to get involved! While we can’t provide smartphones or pedometers for all of your students, we are more than happy to work with you to find a solution - for example, you could consider having one pupil in a class wear a pedometer and then multiplying that figure by the number of students, but we are very open to any other ideas you might have!

As above, we wouldn’t be able to include these figures on the Sport Relief App but would add your figures to our grand total and publicise how you’ve performed as a school on social media.

And of course…

Sport Relief raises money for a huge number of good causes, tackling critical issues affecting people across the UK and the world.

The Sports Relief app allows you to make a donation or set up a giving page if you so choose - even a small donation could help to change someone’s life.

Let’s get stepping!
