At the 2016 Surrey Youth Games ‘Team Surrey Heath’ was victorious in no less than five of the sporting disciplines on offer and ended the weekend as the joint-highest gold medal winners amongst the 11 Surrey Boroughs and Districts.
Around 150 young people represented Surrey Heath across the weekend of 18th and 19th June at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford.
23 teams across 12 sports competed against the ten other boroughs of Surrey and for many of the young people taking part this was their first experience of playing sport at a competitive level outside of school.
The Surrey Youth Games aim to encourage young people to develop their sporting skills, promote physical activity and encourage fair play in sport. Over 290 local young people enjoyed free coaching in the borough last year and it is hoped that many will have made the step to join a local club.
This year, the Specsavers Surrey Youth Games is once again being held at the Surrey Sports Park in Guildford on the weekend of the 17th and 18th June. We hope to see as many of those that took part last year returning as well as plenty more budding Surrey Heath representatives.
Entries for the free training sessions - running from around late April/Early May through to June - will open in the coming weeks, with the exception of swimming where early trials will be held ahead of the free training.
These swimming trials will be held at the Arena Leisure Centre in Camberley on the following dates:
- Year 5 – Thursday 23rd February 5:30 – 6:30pm
- Year 6 – Thursday 2nd March 5:30 – 6:30pm
- Year 7 – Thursday 9th March 5:30 – 6:30pm
Extra sessions will be held on the 16th and 23rd March for those that cannot attend the above sessions. The Surrey Youth Games offers an introduction to competitive swimming and those attending should be confident in the water with an understanding of different strokes.
This year we have some of the most passionate and experienced coaches at great local clubs who without, the games would not be able to take place. Thank you to our fantastic clubs! Lightwater Juniors, Swifts, Streets Heath, Turners Boxing Academy, Camberley Cricket Club, Camberley & Farnborough Hockey Club, Camberley Judo Club, Surrey Heath Netball Club, Camberley Tennis Club, and sponsors such as Places for People and Publicity Plus who provide continuous support team Surrey Heath.
